ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Typical Wind / Racing Conditions

© Noah Fitzgerald (WPNSA, 2023)
  • Weymouth is a coastal location with salt water and tide.
  • Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour have a massive range in wind from 5-30 knots. Depending on whether we have a high or low pressure above us. Our prevailing direction is south westerly 10-20 knots.
  • Portland Harbour has a nasty short chop at the bottom and is flat as a pancake under the causeway over Chesil Beach in a south westerly. Weymouth Bay gets lovely rolling waves with a wind direction with south in it.
  • Both Portland Harbour and Weymouth Bay can be very shifty with any north in the direction. There is no tidal flow in Portland Harbour. Weymouth Bay has a couple of knots which follow the shape of the bay.

Typically, the best options are either hotels or self-catering apartments, which gives the option to stay with other sailors and share costs. There are several hotels and apartments nearby the sailing club. However, it is peak season in Weymouth and Portland in July, so booking early is advised for the best rates and availability.
