Here’s a report by the Swiss Musto Skiff Class Association for the organised Training Camp at Lake Como over 27 April to 4 May 2024. Thanks again to SUI Musto Skiff sailor, Alexander Greil, for organising another fantastic week for all who attended.

Report on Lake Como Training Camp - 27 April to 4 May 2024
Report by the Swiss Musto Skiff Class Association
Participants from France, Germany and Switzerland followed Alex Greil’s call and travelled to Dongo for the training week under the motto “Hang deeper”. The Musto sailors were able to increase their numbers significantly again. In the middle of the week, 21 Musto’s were counted in front of and on Camping Magic Lake. We Musto sailors were reinforced by a lively group from the JSS Jugendsegeln Steckborn, who supplemented the Musto fleet with 49ers with and without FX, Motten, and a WASPZ.
The wind and weather did not cooperate as usual throughout the week, the weather remained changeable in many cases and the Breva, which is typical of Lake Como, was never able to build up properly. However, the participants were not influenced by this, there was sailable wind almost every day. “Hanging low” was also possible in some sessions.
The daily training sessions were organised and coached by Alex. Initially, starting and maneuvers were practiced on command. Towards the end of the week, the emphasis was placed on short races. Free sailing was also not neglected and was used for speed comparison.
The days with lighter winds were used intensively by the rookies and made it possible to swap boats to test and get to know the different skiffs.
First Musto and Lightskiff experiences as well as sailing on the 49er were possible. This also gave the Kite appendix, who were not (yet) sailing, their first sailing experiences. According to JSS, the 49er should also be a perfect dating platform…
If there was a real lull, the JSS troop quickly and creatively conjured up an alternative program; they would practice foiling with a wingboard behind the inflatable boat or have a wakeboard session. This ensured fun and entertainment.
The quieter time was used to get the boats in shape. Alex showed us lots of tips and optimisations and spliced many, many lines. We all still have potential when it comes to sticking on sail numbers 😉
On Thursday there was a lot of wind for a short time towards the evening, which showed us the limits of our skills. In addition to a few scratches, there was also a nose that had to be stitched and taken care of. Get well soon! Sailing can also be a martial art.
In the evenings and when there was no sailing, there was lots of good food, lots of chatting and laughing. Due to its large premises, the Pizzeria La Luna became an evening social meeting place almost every day.
During a visit to the go-kart track in Collico, the racing skills were further practiced outside of the water. It is to be hoped that the next round of barrels will not be “driven” hard on contact.
A nice barbecue evening did not take place due to the cold and rather damp evenings but will hopefully be possible again next year.
All in all, a successful training week with a super cool group! I look forward to seeing you all again next year in Dongo.
Thank you to Alex for the organisation and his input for the training on the water and on land.
