Noble Marine UK Musto Skiff National Championship 2026

North Berwick delivered a classic opening day for the Noble Marine UK Musto Skiff National Championship: sunshine, heavy rain squalls, offshore breeze and plenty of drama.
A testing 14–25 knot south-south-easterly blew straight off the land, producing huge shifts, gusts and lulls that kept the fleet guessing all day. Land effects made the beats particularly tricky, while the race committee did an excellent job adapting the course as the conditions evolved.
The opening race was a bruising three-lap affair that lasted close to an hour and quickly became a battle of survival as much as speed. Danny Boatman looked untouchable after building a commanding lead, only for a series of capsizes to drop him down the fleet. Eddie Bridle took full advantage to claim the race win, with Ben Clegg and Andy Tarboton also featuring near the front, while plenty of sailors admitted they came ashore feeling thoroughly exhausted.
A short postponement followed as heavy rain squalls rolled through the course before racing resumed. With the breeze swinging further east and becoming a little more settled, Race 2 produced another shake-up. Dave Poston reminded everyone of his pedigree with an outstanding downwind leg that saw him charge into the lead, before Boatman sailed through on the final beat to take victory.
The final race of the day brought the most consistent breeze, settling around 15–18 knots with a building sea state and side swell after the rain cleared. The right-hand side of the beat continued to pay, although getting to the top mark was anything but straightforward. Andy Tarboton rounded first after committing hard right, but reigning World Champion Robert Richardson fought through to take the win ahead of Jono Shelley, with Eddie Bridle completing the podium places.
Away from the racing, competitors were full of praise for the welcome at North Berwick. Volunteers helped the fleet negotiate challenging offshore launching conditions, and sailors returned ashore to the welcome sight of pies and pints in the clubhouse.
After three demanding races, Robert Richardson leads the championship overnight, ahead of Jono Shelley in second, with defending UK National Champion Eddie Bridle in third. With such changeable conditions and close racing throughout the fleet, Day 1 has left the championship wide open heading into Friday.
