The annual skiff regatta took place at the Großer Alpsee in Allgäu over the weekend, organised by the Immenstadt Sailing Club. The regatta, which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, attracted numerous sailors from Germany and Switzerland who were looking forward to exciting competitions in a breathtaking setting.
Weather conditions
The weather conditions varied considerably over the three day competition. On Saturday, the wind was between 5 and 10 knots and blew from the west. On Sunday, the wind was between 5 and 7 knots, also from the west. On Monday, the wind calmed down to around 5 knots and blew from the east. It remained mostly sunny throughout the day, with only a few isolated showers in the evening.
Race course
Saturday:
The first five races on Saturday showed the high level of the participants and led to varied results. There were four different winners: Bernd Jahn, Nicolas Duchoud, Mickey Martin, and Alexander Greil.
Alexander Greil, in particular, won two races and took the lead. Nicolas Duchoud and Mickey Martin also showed strong performances, while Bernd Jahn scored points through consistency.
Sunday:
Two more races were held on Sunday. Alexander Greil was unable to extend his lead as all three leaders – Greil, Bernd Jahn and Nicolas Duchoud – were tied with 17 points each and led the field.
Monday:
The last two races on Monday finally decided the overall ranking. Nicolas Duchoud kept his nerve and sailed into the top places again, which ultimately gave him the overall victory. Bernd Jahn and Alexander Greil fought an exciting duel for the other podium places, with Jahn ultimately securing second place. Mickey Martin was able to maintain third place thanks to a consistent performance.
Final results
Place: Nicolas Duchoud (SUI 4, GYC) – Dominated on the decisive day and secured the overall victory.
Place: Bernd Jahn (GER 402, SGU) – Showed an impressive performance over the three days and deservedly took second place.
Place: Mickey Martin (GER 314, BSCF) – Impressed with his consistency and secured third place.
Place: Alexander Greil (SUI 486, YCH) – Led the field at times, but was unable to prevail on the last day.
Place: Roger Oswald (X, SCE) – Showed strong performances and was able to establish himself in the top group.
Participants and boats
The regatta had a total of two sailing fields with 12 Musto Skiffs and 8 49ers, which led to exciting and tactical races. The Great Alpsee, with its size and variable wind conditions, offered ideal conditions for these fast and manoeuvrable boats.
Social program
The organised meal on Friday and Saturday evenings was excellent and offered a variety of regional specialties. After the races, people sat around the fire until late at night, drinking beer or eating cake. These convivial evenings contributed significantly to the good atmosphere and sense of community among the participants.
Conclusion
The skiff regatta on the Great Alpsee was a complete success. The perfect sailing conditions, the exciting competitions, and the excellent organisation by the Immenstadt Sailing Club made for an unforgettable weekend for participants and spectators. The strong performance of the young sailors was particularly pleasing, which gives hope for a successful future for skiff sailing in the region.

GER Class Report: Alpsee Skiff Weekend, 18 - 20 April

The anniversary year 2024 brought predominantly light winds to the 20th Alpsee Skiff Weekend. Rüdiger from Sorpesee describes his impressions of his first Musto Skiff Regatta.
It is well known that the Musto Skiff is a demanding boat. I have been trying to get my Musto Skiff under control for three years now. With moderate success up to that point, I decided to go to Alex’s training camp two weeks ago to train on Lake Como. After learning the basics in a week on Lake Como, I made the decision to do my first Musto Skiff Regatta on Alpsee.
I arrived with Hendrik on Friday afternoon, and we set up our boats. The view of the water promised a crisp 15-20kn wind from the west on Friday. Of course, we didn’t miss this and used Friday afternoon for a training session. When we got off the water, we were already met on the shore by Phillipp, the race director for this weekend, and we ordered pizza with him. Since it was clear that more sailors would show up in the evening, more large pizzas were ordered so that the others could also get something to eat straight away.
On Saturday morning, the remaining sailors also showed up. The wind forecast promised 3-4 Bft for Saturday and our race director Phillipp did not hesitate for long and announced the first start for 12.15 p.m. at the helmsman’s meeting. Since the weather forecast for the rest of the weekend looked a bit weak, he tried to make full use of Saturday. As described in the announcement, we sailed a full five races, a real challenge for me.
The evening program was waiting for us on land, we sat relaxed with a few drinks and music together with the 49er sailors in a large group in the clubhouse. After the rain that had started after the races subsided, the campfire was lit. In contrast to previous years, the 29er sailors were missing, so the usual evening party was a bit smaller.
Sunday had a weak 2 Bft in store for us. The light wind was challenging not only for the sailors, but also for the race management. Due to the wind constantly changing, we spent some time on the water. After a few attempts to start and aborted races, we finally managed to complete three races. After 6 ½ varied hours on the water, I was looking forward to a proper dinner.
Looking at the results list, it was still exciting, but the role of the favourite was still unclear: three people tied for first to third place. So, everything was still up in the air. In the evening, even the race director played flunky ball.
On Monday, the wind turned to the east and the Allgäu mountain panorama was now visible behind the windward mark. Today, the race director also had to contend with a light breeze, but we still managed to finish two races.
Nicolas Duchoud sailed in first place with 15 points, Bernd Jahn came in second with 20 points, and Mickey Martin came in third with 21 points, ahead of Alex Greil with 22 points. In summary, I was very happy to have finished all the races, even if some of them were outside the time limit. The SCAI gave us a very warm welcome and organised a great regatta. The race director and his team did a great job and got the most out of the weekend in terms of sailing.
There is a great sense of solidarity within the class. Between the races and on land, people exchange ideas, and tips and experiences are happily passed on.
