GBR Musto Skiff class event report for the Alpsee Skiff Weekend 2022 with 29er, 49er/FX and Musto Skiff – 4/5 June
Saturday: Colorful mix with a campfire in the evening
The first day at Alpsee begins stormy, a small thunderstorm cell touches the lake and ensures a positive mood for the sailors, at least when they get up. Hustle and bustle on the meadow, scattered 29ers, 49ers and Musto skiffs are set up and all sailors are ready to start on time.
The Musto fleet is represented with at least 10 boats, each with 5 starters from Germany and Switzerland, and shares the lake with 13 49ers and 5 29ers. Unfortunately, the wind has said goodbye by then, and so we wait for the wind with coffee and cake. The sailors can’t stand the idle time any longer and so we sail the first competition in a comfortable 6 km/h wind from the east. In the evening, delicious food awaits us in the club.
Sunday: first 1 start with a light breeze, then later: 2 heroes defy a storm front
Again, we get a visit from a thunderstorm cell, which provides the right wind to get up. Unfortunately, the spook is over after half an hour and the lake presents itself with a mirror-smooth surface, which is only disturbed by a few SUPs and Ferrari pedal boats. The evening of the previous day caused the sailors to leave the port a little late, so that we didn’t get to the lake until around noon. A thunderstorm is forecast for late afternoon, so we only make one take-off and make our way back to shore.
While the horizon is darkening and the calm before the storm prevails in the camp, Filip, our competition director, decides not to start again in the afternoon due to the weather conditions. Two courageous Musto sailors, Alex and Theo, dare to go out on the water.
Suddenly the thunderstorm hits and on land there is a doomsday mood for a short time. Zack-zack, the boats on the lake blew over faster than you can see with the passage of the first squall collar. And when visibility improves again, the sailors stare spellbound at the spectacle in the turbulent water. Our Mustohelden are surrounded by a lifeguard boat and finally have to go ashore almost reluctantly – Alex not without pulling the Geni again first.
The evening is a little quieter again, the youth sailors organize a beer gatta, a race with an opti to the target buoy and back again. Finally, everyone gathers around the campfire and lets the evening fade away.
Monday: a beautiful sailing day
At breakfast time the lake is still calm and a light breeze from the east tickles the leaves of the surrounding trees. Just in time for the start, the wind turned west, and pleasant wind conditions awaited us on the lake at 10 to 15 km/h. With wonderful conditions we can achieve our goal of 5 runs, the wind only weakens a little towards the afternoon.
When all the sailors are back on land, you can see many happy and satisfied faces. Relaxed, Filip lets us pack up the boats before he announces the rankings. The price of the first three is original and causes a lot of amusement among the sailors. The last three days at the Alpsee were a rollercoaster of emotions and we will remember them for a long time. We would like to thank the race director Filip with his grandiose restaurant team and the professional starting boat, who made these days unforgettable. It is these adventures and experiences that are best expressed by the slogan “Alpsee is only once a year”. I’m already looking forward to the next skiff weekend at the Alpsee.
