Report: Kieler Woche 2020

This year, the rescheduled Kiel Week (Kieler Woche) 2020 regatta took place in Kiel, Germany, from 5 – 13 September 2020. The MUSTO Skiff’s were scheduled to race over 5 – 8 September with 12 MUSTO’s turning up for the regatta.

Here are all the daily reports and overall results for the MUSTO Skiffs at this year’s Kieler Woche 2020 regatta, which saw Iver Ahlmann (GER) win the Overall Championship title for the MUSTO Skiffs. As Kieler Woche was also the 2020 German MUSTO Skiff National Championship for this year (due to challenges with event schedules under Covid-19 restrictions), this event was a double title win for Iver, who took home two trophies to celebrate his impressive sailing achievement.

The first day of Kieler Woche / Kiel Week started off with some serious wind. Up to 30 knots was forecast for the afternoon! The fleet decided to go out and give it a try! In total, the fleet managed to do 3 races, but the conditions were tough on both the boat and sailor!

After a very impressive first day, Paul Dijkstra (NED) is leading, with Iver Ahlmann (GER) in second place and Ralf Bussing (GER) in third. Tomorrow is set to be more forgiving with less wind in the forecast. The fleet is looking forward to day 2 of the 2020 Kiel week!

Results after Day 1:
1st place – Paul Dijkstra (NED)
2nd place – Iver Ahlmann (GER)
3rd place – Ralf Bussing (GER)

Great sailing conditions for the second day of the 2020 Kiel Week. With 15-20 knots, the fleet were able to do 4 races as planned. Surprisingly, the Kiel Week weather also shows in September. Despite moving the event back to September for this year, there were rain gusts and strong winds.

The lighter conditions compared to yesterday mixed up the fleet a little with Iver Ahlmann (GER) now in first place and Paul Dijkstra (NED) moving down into second. Jan Busch (GER) is currently in third. A great day on the water, but all are done for today.

Results after Day 2:
1st place – Iver Ahlmann (GER)
2nd place – Paul Dijkstra (NED)
3rd place – Jan Busch (GER)

The third day was perfect racing conditions for us. We managed to get 4 races in. With 13-15 knots, everyone was able to have some fun out on the water. The field was very interesting to watch as the finish was always super close! You can see some of the statistics and leaderboard results here via SAP Sailing Analytics.

Due to high winds, there was no racing on day 4, which meant the overall winner at the end of the regatta was Iver Ahlmann (GER), with Dijkstra (NED) in second place, and Jan Busch (GER) in third.

Congratulations and thanks to all of the participating sailors. It’s was great fun!
