COVID-19 help in Italy
For more information for travellers visiting Italy, see the national COVID-19 website.

For GBR class entrants travelling from the UK to Europe:

Following the Brexit agreement, GBR sailors travelling from the UK to Italy are advised to check for any changes to your usual travel arrangements and any required documents (e.g., passports, travel insurance, driving documents), which may now be applicable as a direct result of the United Kingdom no longer being part of the European Union (EU). You can check the latest travel advice via this link here: https://www.gov.uk/visit-europe-brexit

IMPORTANT: Travel Advice for UK Based Sailors Entering the EU for the 2023 Worlds

Regarding UK based sailors travelling to Europe for the 2023 Worlds, in summary, the conclusion the RYA has reached is that a Carnet is not required when a private traveller enters the EU with personal effects, means of transport or goods imported for sports purposes which they intend to re-export.

However, there are some considerations and specifics that you will need for your travel, so please ensure that you read the latest update via the documents below regarding Border/Travel Requirements from the RYA, which has been prepared by the IMSCA Class Secretary.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Typical Wind / Racing Conditions

MSCA (Subject to copyright)

Thanks to the lake, Torbole benefits from a Sub-Mediterranean climate. July is the hottest month at Lake Garda with average temperatures of 24ºC (75ºF) and highs of 29ºC (84ºF), with 12 hours of sunshine a day in July.

Wind / Racing: Lake Garda is an inshore lake with fresh water and no significant tide. During the summer months it is subjected to winds that operate according to a circadian cycle, affected by the thermal conditions in the surrounding valleys. The ‘Peler’ wind blows from the North during the first twelve hours of the day, affecting the northern part of Lake Garda. It normally starts blowing from 2 or 3 am o’clock at night until 11 or 12 am. In popular slang they say that this wind ‘el pela’(breaks) the waves, which is where its more common name ‘Pelèr’ derives from. The ‘Ora’ blows from the south and is the most famous wind in Upper Garda, famous with sailors from all over the world. It alternates with the Pelèr, blowing from 12/ 1pm until sunset. The Ora achieves its maximum intensity in Upper Garda thanks to the orographic conformation of the valley.

GETTING THERE - TRAVEL OPTIONS

Most of you may choose to drive with your boat to Lake Garda, but if you choose to fly to Italy, the nearest airport to Torbole is Verona. If you fly to Verona Airport, you will have several travel options to reach Torbole – by bus, by train, by taxi, or by rental car. (You can even get a ferry up lake if you want to!)

By Air

There’s no airport in Torbole, but there is a good choice of airports to fly to, all of which can be reached by a number of airlines. In order of distance to travel by car (from the airport to Torbole sailing club), the best options are either:

  • Verona Airport / Aeroporto Verona (also known as Valerio Catullo Airport or Verona Villafranca Airport or Villafranca Airport), which is about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes drive (depending on traffic). >> Get Directions by Car*
  • Brescia Airport, which is about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hour’s drive (depending on traffic). >> Get Directions by Car*
  • Milan Bergamo Airport, which is about 2 hours drive (or longer depending on traffic. >> Get Directions by Car*

If you choose to fly to Milan, there are two airport options.

However, it is typically much easier to fly to Verona if you are travelling to Torbole via a flight with several options to transfer by bus, by train, by taxi, or by rental car. Renting a car is by far the most convenient way to reach Torbole from an airport, or you can opt for an airport pick up service.

For more information about Italian Airports see www.airmundo.com/en/countries/italy/

* IMPORTANT: Google Maps links are a guide only. There may also be tolls on the routes. Please check your airport location and destination address are correct before leaving the airport.

Public Transport - By Bus / By Train / By Train (+Bus)

Verona Airport to Torbole – There is no direct bus from Verona Airport (VRN) to Torbole. However, there are many ways to get from Verona Airport (VRN) to Torbole sul Garda using public transport (by train and bus) or by taxi, car or towncar.

Travelling by public transport, including transfers, can take approximately 4 hours 30 minutes from Verona Airport to Torbole. However, it is the most cost effective way to get there (if you don’t have a car), with ticket fares starting at less than €15.

If you want to get there quicker, transferring by taxis or hire car is much faster, at around an 1 hour, but you can pay up to €100 or more for a taxi transfer.

You can explore the different options using this travel planner website: https://www.rome2rio.com/map/Verona-Airport-VRN/Nago-Torbole

For more information on airport buses to Verona centre for more transfer options, see the Verona Airlink timtables here: www.aeroportoverona.it/en/transport/aerobus

* IMPORTANT: These travel links are a guide only. Please check your airport location and destination address are correct before leaving the airport and check the latest fares on arrival or book online.

By Rental Car

Verona Airport to Torbole – If you are looking to rent a car for the week, there are many options available online or on arrival at the airport. See here for options from Verona Airport www.aeroportoverona.it/en/transport/rent-a-car.

If you are driving from Verona Airport / Aeroporto Verona (also known as Valerio Catullo Airport or Verona Villafranca Airport or Villafranca Airport), it can take about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes drive (depending on traffic). >> Get Directions by Car.**

First time driving in Italy? This article will help to keep you right when you arrive in Italy and begin the journey to Torbole: Driving in Italy – 2023 Detailed Guide for Visitors

** These directions are for planning purposes only. You may find that construction projects, traffic, weather, or other events may cause driving routes to differ from the suggested travel route, and you should plan your route accordingly. You must obey all signs or notices regarding your route – including speeds, which may be different from your own country.

Accommodation Options

Torbole (Image via Pixabay)

Typically, the best options are either hotels or self-catering apartments, which gives the option to stay with other sailors and share costs. There are several hotels and apartments in the town that are nearby the club and the evening entertainment. However, it is peak season in the Italian Lakes in July, so booking early is advised for the best rates and availability.

Hotels and Apartments

If you prefer a hotel or apartment, the Circolo Vela Torbole host sailing club website has some useful local accommodation suggestions. See here: https://www.circolovelatorbole.com/en/p/hotel

Availability for other accommodation options can also be found on:

Use Google maps to check the distance to the sailing club so you can see if it is walking distance, a bicycle ride, or a car trip away. Google maps is also a great way to find nearby accommodation options too.

Camping

A more cost effective (and more fun!) option is camping. For Campsites, here is a useful website page we found to help you plan your location and book a pitch for the event dates: https://www.eurocampings.co.uk/italy/trentino-alto-adige/trentino/nago-torbole/

As a reminder, the host venue and address is:

Circolo Vela Torbole
Via Lungolago Conca d’Oro, 12, 38069 Nago-Torbole TN, Italy

Website: https://www.circolovelatorbole.com/en

Please note that mobile homes/camper vans may not be used for sleeping overnight on the Club premises, or the immediate vicinity, which includes the adjacent car park.

Things to do at the Event Location

Torbole town (image via visitgarda.com)

The small town of Torbole is known for its colourful houses and dramatic scenery. Despite its size, it has a range of shops, bars, and nice restaurants to enjoy, and for non-sailing friends and family members, there’s a lot to do in Torbole and nearby, including mountain biking, windsurfing, hill climbing, canyoning, beach activities (pebbly/gravely), canoeing, and ferry boat trips on the lake.

The majority of these activities are all available within a short walk of the town centre and sailing club, or you can take a short trip by car, bus or ferry to visit other beautiful towns on the lake for even more outdoor activities, tourist sites, and places to eat and drink. Nearby towns to visit for a day trip include Riva del Garda, Limone sul Garda, and Malcesine.

So, if you have friends or relatives interested in joining you for a holiday – bring them along!
