Flight information
The nearest airport to Attersee
is Mozart Airport (Saltsburg International (code SZG))
named after the composer who was born in the town. Attersee
is 45 minute drive, unless you decide to stop for coffee
at the Red Bull museum on the outskirts of the airport…and
yes, they do have the jet pack and formula 1 cars!

ATTERSEE - WHAT TO EXPECT by
Nigel Wallbank
In 1994, from May 7th-13th, the Int.Contender
class held its world championships at UYCAS on Lake
Attersee. The lake is 23km long and 2-3 km wide over
most of its length which runs north south. UYCAS is
situated about a third of the way down on the western
shore. There were 100 boats from 10 countries. Racing
took place over 6 days with only the 3rd day having
‘unusual for here weather’, thunderstorms and heavy
rain.
The other 5 days featured thermal breezes,
which blow from the NE, and were in the range of 6-12
knots and filled in around noon. Experience for the
week and also talking to the local Star sailors was
that the wind is generally stronger towards the east
shore. The wind would fade away around 18.00hrs.
The race team were well organised and
knew their conditions so that ahead of the thundery
day the bar remained open longer than usual and the
band hired for the evening, paid extra to perform into
the small hours, as the racing the following day could
only take place in the late afternoon when two races
were completed.
The lake has high mountains to the east
and even more so to the south as they head up to the
high snow capped Alpes. So the scenery is stunning.
The club house was very luxurious with
a couple of bars, a sail loft etc plus a large marquee
was erected on a lawn. But also very welcoming to the
Contender fleet that year, and two of the most memorable
parties, the band mentioned above plus the best cocktail
night, ever witnessed at a Contender worlds, took place
that week.
Camping was only a couple of hundred meters
from the club and there were plenty of B&Bs close
by.
Partners were taken to Salzburg
by coach [about 45 minutes] famous as the birthplace
of Mozart but also a beautiful city. Skiing up on the
glaciers, cycling, rock climbing and hang gliding were
all close bye.
