MUSTO Skiffs block out the top with 11 boats in attendance
9
Datchet MUSTO’s made the trip to Grafham to join the
2 locals Dave Annan and Luke Draper for the 3rd event
in the popular GJW Direct Sailjuice Winter Series. After
seemingly endless days of stormy weather – which forced
the postponement of the Brass Monkey 2 days prior –
the fleets were blessed with a beautiful sunny day and
steady 10-14kt breeze and a record entry of 185 boats.

Same-same
but different… GER-000 „Kleiner Hai“ - The prototype
boat Webmasters note:
Every class starts with a prototype;
these usually end up on a bonfire or abandoned in a
dinghy park to rot away ... but Frederick Feulner has
put a fantastic effort into putting boat number 000
back on the water. Living in Kiel near the water,
sailing since 1998, I was in dire need for a new boat.
Helping out in Joachim „Schappi“ Harpprechts boat storage
on one foggy winter day I found the dusty hull of the
MUSTO Skiff prototype. As I am a big friend of a sustainable
„choose to reuse“ policy, I was interested in starting
a new project: Getting the prototype back on the water
within the next season. Read

2013 MUSTO Skiffs GBR Travellers
Series Report The 2013 UK travellers
series did not get off to an auspicious start when the
first event at Rutland had to be postponed due to snow
and ice. Something to do with the number thirteen? The
rescheduled event in the middle of the summer turned
out to be a real eye opener sailing in a shorty and
enjoying drinks on the club balcony in the evening.
This turned out to be the only event that the well travelled
pair from Datchet of Jamie Hilton and his trusty lieutenant

light but stable breeze greeted the 28 entrants at Grafham

10
reasons why I chose to race a MUSTO Skiff: by Ben Schooling
1. I’d been sailing the RS800 for 8 consecutive seasons
with 3 different crew / helm partnerships and I was
basically looking for a new challenge. I was struggling
to train regularly (if at all) with my crew George Kingsnorth
and wanted to do more sailing. I might add the RS800
is still a great class and I’ve returned to compete
at the Nationals and Garda the last couple of years
and aim to continue to do so.

EuroCup series overall A
very close end to year of the EuroCup series saw two
place changes in the top 4 overall at the Belgium Falling
Leaves regatta. It would seem that if you are planning
on a EuroCup campaign you need to consider this event
in 2014. The dates are already set for 4th – 5th October!
Again a worthy, and well travelled winner, sees Roger
Oswald win the series from Swiss compatriot Nicolas
Duchoud, who is apparently stuck in the mountains somewhere
doing national service (I could think of worse things
to be doing). Holland’s Paul Dijkstra just overtook
the UK’s Ben Schooling to take 3rd place by one point,
followed by Alexander Greil from Switzerland and a group
of German and UK sailors headed by class chairman Iver
Ahlmann. This series continues to attract an excellent
turnout, with 106 boats scoring at least one result
and quite a few taking part in more than the 3 results
that count for the series, so if you are thinking about
what to do next season, why not team up with some friends
and travel to some of Europe’s friendliest sailing venues!.
Next seasons dates will appear on the Google calendar

Three Races More with
Thermal „Wind of Roses“
Thursday morning dawned
foggy, and there was some concern over whether the wind
would appear at all as a day on shore was not a welcome
prospect. The fleet put the time to good use as the
jury kindly ran a forum to discuss the rules that they
would be looking for whilst judging on the water to
help clarify the disqualifications from the previous
day.
By 11:30am the sun had burnt through the cloud and the
wind of roses has started to blow. The fleet launched
and race 8 got underway at 12:45 in a 10-12kt northerly
the same as the day before. Dave Poston led the fleet
out to the right hand side of the course but tacked
just shy of the layline to allow Ben Schooling to round
first from Jamie Hilton. The positions stayed the same
to the finish with boats from Datchet Water in the UK
finishing 1,2,3 and Catharina Guada scoring an excellent
4th place. Read

SPORTS MASSAGE AND PHYSIOTHERAPY
Back by popular demand.... As I am
sure you are all aware, injuries are fairly common during
these events whether it is a niggle from training, overuse
injury or trauma (on and off the water). But do not
worry, we are here to help! We will come armed with
massage oils, deep heat, freeze spray, rigid tape, kinesio
tape, acupuncture needles and strong arms. We will be
offering physiotherapy treatment and sports massage
to competitors, family of competitors/support teams
and club members throughout the GBR MUSTO Skiff Nationals.

On holiday in North Berwick -
GBR Stunning conditions prevailed

the UK series). Launching in 8kts and glorious sunshine,
racing got underway in the easterly bay under the backdrop
of the ever spectacular Bass Rock, with the fleet of
7 skiffs enjoying perfect weather and a building breeze.

first day permitted no racing but lot of rain. The Yacht
Club Thun had a nice hospitality with a restaurant where
the swiss musto fleet of 17 sailors socalised and talked
for several hours. The second day everyone was happy
that the rain stopped and the wind started to blow.
The whole fleet was ready and concentrated to give the
best. It is a joy to see so much effort and motivation

UK Series Event 3: Stone Sailing
Club 18/19th May. - GBR 16 boats
arrived to take part in round 3 of the UK series at
last years’ nationals venue, Stone Sailing Club. As
per forecast the breeze was light 5-8kts with 10 degree
shifts and despite a chill in the air it was certainly
fully heated racing! Sailing on the same course as the
K6’s proved tricky with the fleet needing to be on their
guard to avoid the large wind shadows upwind and down.
The red mist was seen to descend upon several of the
fleet, especially at the leeward mark pile ups! More

skiff sailors arrived at Datchet to be greeted with

race officer rightly postponed and later cancelled sailing

racing round a short course in 0-3 knots of wind is
surprisingly fun... you just have to decide the windward
mark after the start. The fleet came in for brownies

“The series is based around six of the UK's biggest
winter handicap events. Sailors from many different
dinghy fleets now consider this series as one of the
main goals of their winter racing. With great prizes
on offer, it attracts some of the best sailors in the
country to compete against each other”. This year saw
over 800 separate competitors and over 200 taking part

are the best designed and best built boats I have ever

old is testament to the quality of the boat in terms

 How
to progrip the wings by Max Doehler GER

After 4 years of use the original grey
antisliptape on my wings was completely worn off. Therefore
I decided to take the time to change it for Progrip.I
believe ProGrip is superior to the grey tape because
it provided better grip, it dosn't wear out your clothes
or skin, it looks better and is cheaper. But it is less
robust to damage. Read
