Austrian
MUSTO Skiff Class Championships : Sept. 15th-16th, 2012
The last weekend (Sept. 15th-16th,
2012) UYCAs organized the Austrian Class Championships
and the Regional Championships of Upper Austria of the
MUSTO-Performance-Skiff Class. The international Musto Skiff-Class
graded the event as European-Cup. On saterday we had
overcasted sky and threat of rain, winds up to 10 knots
rotating from S to W. For the 3 races of the day PRO
Christian Hotwagner (UYCAs) had to send the fleet of
9 boats from AUT and GER repeatedly on new courses.

The MUSTO Skiff GBR Southern
Series 2012 The MUSTO Skiff Southern
series 2012 saw 73 individual competitors racing across
9 events in what was a pinnacle year for the class with
the World championships at the Olympic Regatta venue.
The series kicked off at Chew Valley in February with
just 10 boats at this early stage in the season. Ian
Martin showed that his training hours put in over the
winter were well spent taking a narrow victory over
Jamie Hilton with Dan Vincent in 3rd. Read

MUSTO Skiffs at Go for Gold Regatta
at Black Rock (AUS) Last weekend
was the annual mixed class regatta with over 100 boats
at Black Rock Saturday was hot. The heat brings all
sorts of people to Half Moon Bay. Salman was there for
a swim, he was from the Nunawading triathlon club. Salman
found the MUSTO Skiff intriguing, he was keen to give
it a try, he wondered why somebody would go so far out
into the bay without an engine. Race 1, the 10 knot
northerly was perfect, Richard was leading by miles
but decided to do his own race around the long course.
Will showed some rare form leading around the short
course from start too finish. Jon had a costly bad tack
on the first work, which cost him. Read

Ovington Boats GBR Inland Championships
2012 It was great to see 40 MUSTO
Skiffs turn out for the Ovington Boats Inlands at Grafham
Water, the sun shone, although thigh-burning conditions
were prevalent for the entire weekend with conditions
no more than 10 knots. The skiffs were too keen to get
away in the first race and the black flag came out after
the first general recall and was used for the rest of
the weekend to keep the fleet in check. Daniel Henderson,
back from his sabbatical in the 49er, took two well
deserved race wins on Saturday to show that he hadn’t
lost any of his speed. 49er Olympic campaigner, Alain
Sign has recently bought a boat and clearly been practising,
taking a race win at his first MUSTO event, with Bruce
Keen also taking a win.read

With 101 entries it is great to see so many people

MUSTO Skiff German Open Both
northern and southern Germans agree upon the beauty

little wind. Not exactly ideal for the avid skiff sailor.

Lee-on-the-Solent
open The Lee-on-the-Solent open saw 11 competitors
enter the contest for what was to turn into an epic
event. The race officer set up for the first race, to
be shooed out of the way by some big yachty club from
Cowes. The course was reset to the western end of the
Lee frontage for another big boat event to set their
leeward mark just to windward of our windward mark.
This was lucky as the boats that sailed from Stokes
bay had under estimated the time it would take to get
to the race area and would have been late but for the
postponement. More

Some
thoughts about the 2012 Worlds in Weymouth by the Jury
Chairman. I think I can speak
for the whole jury to say that we really enjoyed the
worlds and the friendliness of the class. Following
some personal comments about what I observed. First
I really liked the fairness of the competition with
everybody who brakes a rule doing his turn. Given the
size of the fleet I expected a lot more problems - and
screaming - at the first windward mark, but obviously
the class consists of experienced sailors who know the
benefits of fast sailing versus boat to boat incidents.

The
morning after the night before; last night the class
hosted a gala dinner for 180 competitors and friends
as well as guests of event sponsor ACO who had invited

The dinner was a huge success and the assembled were
well entertained by double medalist Simon Hiscocks who

auction in aid of CRASH the homeless charity nominated
by ACO. The auction raised £1,600 and special
mention must go to Nigel Walbank who not only donated
a stunning pair of Bolle sunglasses to the lots, but
also very generously bid for two lots totalling £712.

as the conditions here at Weymouth looked perfect for
skiff sailing. The wind was a good 16 – 20 knots and
the racing was scheduled to be inside the harbour. Read

Well worth the wait ... EPIC

The fleet were eventually released about 4ish for two

upwind; at the first mark it was Keen (GBR) followed
by Schwerdt (GER) and Newman (AUS). Read

out was just a warm up for big Sunday). Fast out of
the blocks in Race 1 were Jamie Hilton, Jono Shelley
and Ian Pittendreigh with Alistair Conn making up significant
ground from a slow start as the race continued. Some
confusion at the end of the second lap meant that the
lion's share of the fleet believed that they had finished

MUSTO Skiffs coming from 4 different countries (Switzerland,

which is now part of the Euro Cup Series. This year
we were forced to move this event to the very beginning

World Championship in Weymouth which is going to be
one of the top events in the history of our class. However,

once again hosted the MUSTO fleet for the last event

with I14s, B14s and Moths in the annual skiff get together.
Saturday turned out to be a much nicer day than forecast
with a fairly steady 10knt south-easterly and 25 degrees
– not bad for winter sailing. The first race got underway
with a big wind shift 5 minutes after the gun, half
the fleet tacked onto it, but it never went back, so
the race quickly turned into 2 divisions. Not that it
mattered all that much, the little guys all finished
up the lead group, and setting the trend for the weekend
no-one could catch Jon Newman, who led home Tim Hill
and an excellent race from Chris Piele. Read

Skiff Open - 24 & 25 March 2012 Rutland Water Sailing
Club 18 boats assembled for round
2 of the circuit, with only Bruce Keen and Nigel Walbank
travelling up from the South coast given the very light
forecast. The PRO was optimistic the races would run
and sure enough the fog burnt off around 11:30 to reveal
a light 4-5kts SE and brilliant sunshine. Racing got
underway about 12:30 and from the gun the pack tacked
off and headed right up the first beat with better pressure
appearing off the shore. Dave Poston picked the layline
and lead round the windward mark but the finish Sten
had pulled through to take the bullet with Dave in 2nd
and a good result for Luke Draper in 3rd. Read

Forestay
cover (John Colgrave GBR363) Fed up with massy
loads of tape on the bow rig adjuster? Looking for a
better solution than a bit of bike inner tube. Use a
thin bit of plastic tube combined with 2 shroud covers
that can just slide up & down, no tape needed. Plus
this makes the sheets roll round the forestay on a gybe
much easier. More

MUSTO Skiff Black Rock Open Weekend 2012 11
MUSTOs gathered for a hastily reconvened Open Meeting
at Black Rock, having been moved on from the scheduled
Sail Sandy resail. First time out was super Sabre sailor,
Wayne Bates in the demo boat, and returning newlywed
(a thousand women sigh) Marcus Hamilton sailing Mario
Kart, Jon Newman revving up for the upcoming Worlds
at Weymouth and Tim Hill launching his new boat, again
named Jet. read

Skiffs at RYA Volvo Dinghy Show 2012 Our
class was well attended over the weekend, with helpers
Tim Chapman, Chris Henderson, Dave Poston and Ben Schooling
ably supported by UK class chairman Jon Simpson, class
marketing man Rick Perkins and international secretary
Paul Manning being kept busy by interested sailors and
class members popping in for a chat from as far afield
as Norway! The new class demo boat was on the stand
and loads of kids were helping themselves to the car
stickers, no doubt to put on their parents cars as a
reminder of what they want when they grow up. We also
had a number of sailors who have requested a demo, and
we’ll be hoping to get them out as soon as is convenient!

an amendment to rule C.7.1(b) permitting the re-gripping

are effective as of 2nd February 2012.
MUSTO Skiff Training – Rutland,
28-29 February 2012 On the weekend of 28-29 Jan 2011,
7 hardy Skiff sailors congregated
at Rutland Water with respected sailor and trainer Ian
Turnbull - to be put through their paces and learn a
few tricks. The motley crew of class-newbies, old hands
(including local hero Richard Stenhouse) and those in
between completed 7 short (2 lap) races on the first
day. We were kept moving by a good 10mph wind and Ian
hot on our tails - as he shadowed everyone round to
give timely hints, and capture all the right and wrong
practice on video for forensic examination later Read
