International
Musto Performance Skiff UK National Championships 2009
Hosted by East Lothian Yacht Club North
Berwick 18th-21st June http://www.elyc.org.uk/
The East Lothian Yacht Club is one of
the premier sailing clubs in Scotland, with a magnificent
expanse of water from the sandy beaches and harbour
to the Bass Rock and the North Sea beyond.
Alastair Skinner, Commodore of the club, and class members
Gavin Homer and Ian Renilson have been working with
their team to put together out first UK National Championships
north of the border. There is a possibility that if
conditions are good, we may hold one race around the
famous Bass Rock. The scenery is stunning, as is the
sailing water!
The club is a recognised RYA training establishment
running training courses, club dinghy racing, keelboat
racing, and a variety of open events.
In recent years the following classes have held their
UK championships at North Berwick: Contender, Enterprise,
International 14, Laser2000, RS200, RS400, Solo and
Topper.

PRE EVENT TRAINING
Musto Skiff Training: Pre-Nationals with
Harvey Hillary
The Musto Skiff Class Association with
support from RYA Scotland will be running a 2 day training
camp lead by Olympic Squad coach Harvey Hillary on the
16th & 17th June, the 2 days prior to the UK Nationals.
The training will be hosted by East Lothian
Yacht Club at North Berwick.
The training will cover the below format:
Sail Set Up: De-brief based on facts in
the racing. Not interested in tuning numbers but direct
comparisons on the water between fast and slow boats
and simple technique and sail shape differences.
Set Plays: Dynamic drills that simulate racing conditions.
Start, Upwind Cross, Windward Mark Approach and Leeward
Mark Rounding.
Practice Races:
Starting: Identify the key skills, practice
pre race and pre-start routines
Strategy: Identify the priorities for the race course
/ type of day, get a strategic plan and execute the
plan.
Boat Handling: Pre-event is not the time
to test a new technique but you can ‘warm up’ and remind
yourself of key techniques.
The costs of the training are supported
by the MPSCA & RYA Scotland meaning the attendees
only need to pay a nominal fee of £15 per day.
Places on the training course must be
booked by emailing John Evans at jevans@nodent.co.uk
Places are limited and will be allocated
on a first come first served bases so please books ASAP.

On the Wednesday Evening Jim Sinclair
