Musto Skiff Training
Pre-Nationals at East Lothian YC
Prior to the Musto Performance Skiff Nationals
training was held for 20 boats lead by Harvey Hillary.
To give the new comers to the fleet a good head start
in their boats and to sharpen up the skills of the old
hands the MPSCA held training supported by RYA Scotland
to give the event a fantastic kick start.
The first days training was held in a 10 ? 15 knot breeze
with the training programme designed by Harvey to develop
boat handling and to simulate as many racing situations
to get the fleet ready for the event ahead.
The pupils broke for lunch to review the video debrief
and then were soon out on the water again for 6 short
practice races.

In
the evening the team reviewed what had been learnt over
the previous hours via a video debrief. The session
was also improved through the excellent contributions
from the top sailors in the fleet who were very willing
to share any information with their fellows to help
them develop their skills.
On the second morning the fleet was greeted with rain
and stronger winds. After a briefing by Harvey the sailors
set out for further practice. The breeze built through
the session giving the pupils the ability to test their
hand in the higher winds.
Again,
the excellent video debrief from Harvey supported by
the input from the top sailors gave some excellent tips
for the sailors.
Thanks to all the team at East Lothian Yacht Club for
providing the rescue support and to Harvey for leading
the training and RYA Scotland for their support for
this training event.
As we write this the 53 Musto Skiffs are on stand-by
for the first race which at present is under a 3 hour
postponement due to high winds ...
