South Shields
Open Report
Seven Musto Skiffs were amongst the twenty
asymmetrics that took part in the South Shields asymmetric
open on 17th -18th May. The wind was North Easterly
all weekend so the sea was very lumpy.
For the first race the wind was force
4 with a choppy confused sea. There was a lot of capsizing
as people found that their manoeuvres that they had
practiced on flat water did not work in rough conditions
(speaking personally). Ian Trotter was the first Musto
followed by John Events and Peter Griffith.
The wind dropped in race 2 so it was marginal
trapezing conditions. Ian Trotter was the first Musto
followed by Peter Griffith and John Evens. For race
3 the wind picked up and the results were the same as
race 1.
Everyone seemed to be complaining of stiff
arms and legs on Sunday morning from battling through
the waves. The waves had got move regular but bigger
making for good surfing conditions. The results for
race four were the same as for race 3.
During the last race the wind picked up
and the waves got very big and steep. The Musto sailors
who had not retired stopped hoisting their spinnakers
due to the extreme conditions. Yet again the results
were the same as for race 1.
On the way in competitors overtook a sailing
club rib being towed in because one side was flat. Apparently
it had been T-boned by a catamaran.
A big thank you must go to the OD, rescue
and kitchen volunteers for a very well organised and
enjoyable event.
